This session reveals how to create a good Test Policy document for your organisation and how to encourage management sign-off for this essential foundational document. Create your own Test Policies relevant to the context you are presented with, learn the differences between Test Policies and Test Strategies and how to formulate a Test Strategy document from the Test Policies. Templates and examples will be provided which can ultimately save your organisation time and money.

Test Plans - 1 hour

Based upon the new IEEE829 Test Documentation Standard, this session provides a valuable Test Plan template which can then be used. Learn how to tailor your Test Plans depending on scope, lifecycle model and the risks your company has. This session will also show how to create highly effective Test Plans that will be read and commented on by other people within the project team. Learn how to avoid producing Test Plans that become obsolete and boring. This session will also provide key ideas on how to improve your own Test Plan template.

Test Estimation - 2 hours

Whilst test estimation is seen by many as being no different to estimating any other project activity, this session demonstrates why test estimation is very different and how it can be so difficult to convince others of the estimates provided. Learn why it is essential to not only estimate effort but to also estimate the quality expected and how there is a direct correlation between effort and quality. Eight powerful estimation techniques are demonstrated and estimation utilities will be provided, helping you become effective in estimating testing within your own organisation.

Test Monitoring, Control and Reporting - 2 hours

Providing accurate, timely and relevant information to stakeholders is a vital objective for the test team. This session shows the power of providing good quality "Test Manager Dashboards" and demonstrates eight powerful test monitoring techniques to consider including on your dashboard. Utilities and spreadsheets will be provided along with a template dashboard. Learn how to provide prediction and trend analysis to help stakeholders make informed decisions and how to tailor the information for the intended recipient. Also learn how to interpret graphs and how some graphs can be contradictory and cause confusion. A variety of controlling activities will be discussed along with the effectiveness of each and how too much "overtime" soon becomes "undertime".

Measuring the Value of Testing - 1 hour
It is important to demonstrate the value that testing provides to both projects and the organisation and how to regularly report this to senior management. Learn six powerful measurement techniques that can easily be adapted for your own organisation ultimately showing the benefits that testing provides in objective, clear and understandable terms. Using these measurement techniques can then be adopted during projects as part of your dashboard display showing key stakeholders of the value that testing is providing on the project. During this session you will be provided with a "value of testing" calculator-spreadsheet that can easily be adapted to use within your own context.

Test Improvement and Retrospectives - 1 hour
It is important that we learn lessons and improve both ourselves and testing, yet few organisations embrace and encourage this concept. The result is that the same mistakes are made and we find it difficult to make time to improve ourselves and our processes. Learn how to conduct effective "post project reviews/retrospectives" and the importance of reporting the benefits to key stakeholders. This session will also provide two content reference models and two process reference models to use in Test Improvement. Learn how to set yourself objectives and actions to become more effective and more efficient in testing both in the short term and long term.

Testers Style Analysis - 1 hour

The Tester's Style Analysis questionnaire is a simple questionnaire that will help establish the type of tester you and your team are. By completing this questionnaire it will highlight both strengths and weaknesses and the types of testing tasks that suit your personality and style. This session will demonstrate how certain personality conflicts can arise within the team and how this can be avoided. Learn to recognise each of the 4 styles of tester; Pragmatist, Analyst, Facilitator and Pioneer within your team and how a good mix should be encouraged for maximum effectiveness.

Motivation and Influencing Skills - 1 hour

Motivation and influencing are two of the main skills every Test Manager/Team Lead should embrace and improve upon. Learn how to recognise both motivated and de-motivated testers and how we can motivate them to achieve greater productivity. Discover some key motivational factors that do not necessarily involve monetary rewards. This session also explains the difference between the "push" and "pull" style influencing techniques and how the "push" style is the most natural but can be the most damaging. Learn how to progress from the "push" style to the "pull" style and the different circumstances that Test Managers are faced with in trying to influence the outcome.

Psychology of Testing - 30 minutes

This session provides an understanding into why defects occur in software. Learn how short, medium and long term memory problems can increase the defect rate and why different perspectives are vital to increase detection rates. The psychology of successful testing is rooted in collaboration and good clear communication at all levels.
